Keeping Exotic Pets – is it a Good Idea?

Many people are now deciding that they would like to keep exotic animals as pets. Amphibians, reptiles, fish, insects – all of these could come under the category of exotic pets. However, is it a good idea?

Exotic pets can be excellent animals to keep as long as you choose the right ones. Often they won’t be as affectionate as animals like cats, dogs and rodents. However, that doesn’t mean that they can’t be beautiful and fascinating to observe, and if you spend lots of time handling them they might become quite friendly.

You will need to make sure that you are aware of all the equipment you will need, and that you have plenty of space for it. Exotic pets will require a lot of specialist equipment such as tanks and heat lamps, and they won’t be cheap. On the other hand, once you’ve invested in the right equipment your pets will be a lot less demanding than animals like dogs which need regular walking.

Most importantly, if you decide to buy exotic pets, purchase them from a reputable retailer. Despite everyone’s best efforts, there is still an illegal pet trade and the last thing you would want to do is encourage it. Animals are poached from the wild and are shipped around the world in terrible conditions, and you might even end up owning a species which is illegal to keep as a pet. Do plenty of research before buying and if you have any doubts at all about a retailer, do not use them. It’s better to be safe than sorry.
